Are there Benefits to Radon?

Most people are unaware of the dangers of radon gas and where it comes from. Radon is a naturally formed radioactive gas that that comes up from the Earth through soil and water. Radon is not only invisible to the naked eye, but also odorless, and colorless. From the EPA we learn:

Radon (chemical symbol Rn) …comes from the natural decay of uranium and radium found in nearly all rocks and soils. Radon can move up from the ground into buildings through openings in floors or walls that are in contact with the ground.

For so deadly a gas, one might wonder, are there any advantages to radon? Surprisingly, there are! According to The Journal of Radiation and Applied Sciences:

As gases, the isotopes are mobile and carry messages over significant distances within the earth and in the atmosphere…. It can [also] be used to predict the arrival of an earthquake (Yang et al., 2004), to locate uranium deposits (Fleischer, 1988) and crude oil (Donovan, 1974).

Remember: Albuquerque, Santa Fe and surrounding areas are known to have high levels of radon. Be sure to have your home and office tested every two years…even if you have a mitigation system installed. Test a home – Save a life.
